March 22, 2009 Dr. Bob Kirk Mutiny on the Bounty |
The Mutiny aboard His Majesty's ship Bounty in 1789 has been retold in five movies and in bestselling novels. The mutineers, led by Fletcher Christian, put Captain Bligh and 25 crewmen in an open boat and Bligh made his way back to England to insist the mutineers be hanged. Christian and eight others fled to the best possible refuge in the Pacific - mountainous, virtually inaccessible Pitcairn Island. Their descendants still live there, truly isolated half way between Chile and New Zealand. Bob told the story of the mutiny and the fate of the mutineers. The main focus of the talk was on the adventures of the mutineers' descendants to the present time. Dr. Kirk has taught history for nearly forty years, most recently at Santa Rosa J.C. and for Osher Life Long Learning. He is past president of the World Affairs Council of Sonoma County. His book Pitcairn Island, The Bounty Mutineers and their Descendants was published by McFarland (2008).
