Bob Ayers & Aly Tamboura
Can a Prison Newspaper Help Keep America Safe?
Prison: Punish or Rehabilitate? That’s the issue for prisons in the U.S. today. If you punish a prison inmate will that stop them from repeating their offense? Or does creating a positive experience and teaching marketable skills work better? Former warden of San Quentin, Bob Ayers, strove to implement effective remediation strategies with the help of then-inmate Aly Tamboura.

What You Should Know About Private Investors in Healthcare
In 2011, private investment firms invested about $30 Billion (yes! BILLION) dollars in the healthcare industry but by 2021, they were investing $200 BILLION dollars. Is it because they are committed to making America's healthcare the best in the world? Or could the 18% to 27% return on their investment have something to do with it ...? And, how are they making those huge returns? More importantly, what does that mean for our personal experience with our healthcare system?

One good thing: many of their neighbors in Sonoma County took care of their land for them until the families came home. Cleopatra: Seductress or Cunning Politician?
Cleopatra has been called one of the great seductresses of human history -- but she was no bimbo. She had only two relationships in 18 years – and each was critical for her kingdom. Tea preparation and drinking was elevated to an art form requiring highly trained tea masters and elaborate ceremonies. You’ll never look at tea the same again.

Marriage in America
No rite has a greater impact on our lives than marriage. Just as it’s hard for our daughters and granddaughters to realize the changes that have occurred in women’s rights in our lifetimes, it’s hard for us to recognize the restrictions on women’s rights that existed prior to the 1920’s, much less the dramatic changes to marriage itself with the legalization of miscegenation and same sex marriage.
George will take us on a whirlwind tour through marriage in America historically. We’ll discuss the legal position of married women beginning in the Colonial years where their rights were based on British common law; the period from 1790 to 1920 when there were restrictions on married women's rights that were gradually lifted; and the new types of marriage now allowed that were absolutely forbidden during most of our history.

It Almost Didn't Happen
OK. So you have this really big project. You put someone in charge of it. There are some project managers who will get it done brilliantly – and there are some project managers who … well … just can’t. All projects are inherently risky, especially complex ones. Trying to anticipate what unexpected problems may crop up can be challenging for even the most experienced project manager. One of the biggest and most complex projects was the building of the Panama Canal. Two different project managers of the Canal were as different as night and day -- and made the difference between a failed project and a successful one.

Last Supper in Pompeii
Pompeii in 79 AD. Museum Docent, Carol Porter, will take on us on a fascinating journey into the culinary and social life of these ancient people. Going to the market, preparing food, having friends over for dinner -- these were integral parts of their life. And then ... on a day that started just like any other day, a precise moment in Roman life was flash frozen for centuries when Mt. Vesuvius covered Pompeii in 15 feet volcanic ash. This gives us a telescope to look back through time back into their every day lives.

The Outlier: The Life and Presidency of Jimmy Carter
We are honored to have Pulitzer Prize Winner, Kai Bird, present an illuminating re-evaluation of the complex triumphs and tragedies of Jimmy Carter's presidential legacy. Ever since Ronald Reagan's landslide win in November 1980, pundits have labeled Jimmy Carter's single term in the White House a failed presidency. But Carter's time as president is a compelling and under-explored story which was marked by both accomplishment and adversity. Kai Bird will help us see Carter's presidential tenure and accomplishments since then with new eyes.

Human Rights in China
Did you know that when China incarcerates or “re-educates” people, they take their blood type? If in the United states, you have to wait years for an organ transplant, that if you go to China and are willing to pay enough money, can you guess why you can usually get an organ transplant within a month? Millions of Chinese people have been arrested for their spiritual beliefs or political views. Dr. Chen will open our eyes to what happens to these unfortunate people.

Aging Into the Future With Gusto
We are all getting older – this lecture could help us do it better. Dr. Newman studies the causes of aging down to the cellular and molecular level. Among the things his lab studies are ketones … you know … the current diet technique of eating to encourage ketosis so you burn fat for energy. Dr. Newman will tell us about that process as well as other important facets that will let us add years without adding pain. As The Buck Institute puts it: "Live Better Longer"
Here are a few links about the Buck Institute and also about ways to get involved in clinical research in aging:

Fred Euphrat has always loved the outdoors. Forests cover one-third to one-half of earth’s dry land so how that land is used and managed is critical. As Fred puts it: “I became a forester because the people who control the bulldozers shape the land for the next 10,000 years.” Fred has a PhD in forest hydrology. Managing forests to mitigate wild fires and control water is his passion. His radio show in which he shared his inspiring insights on conservation and the environment was nationally acclaimed.

What could be more American than hot dogs, popcorn and going to the movies?? We can all remember the excitement of standing in lines that wound around the corner to see some of our favorite movies. Going to the movies has been a part of our lives. But no one has been going to the movies during the Pandemic. No one. Will they still be there when the Pandemic is over? One of our favorite speakers, Ky, will talk to us about the challenges.

Yeah! They have vaccines against COVID!! At last!! This is what we've been waiting for. This is what we need to stop the Pandemic, and to see friends and family again -- and to not die!. We are all in line to get it. But when? And is one brand of vaccine more effective than another? Why do some require a second shot 21 days later? What happens if you get the second shot 30 days later? Will the vaccine protect against mutations? Come get your questions about the COVID vaccine answered.
See our page, COVID19 Info for contact numbers and websites to sign up for testing, to get the vaccines, to check where vaccines are being held, etc.

Beavers: Conservationists Who Mate for Life
Happy Valentine’s Day! And the perfect animals to celebrate are beavers. Why? They mate happily for life. And not only is that kind of cool, but they are also a “keystone” animal. When these resilient critters aren’t around, the ecology doesn’t work right; when they are around, life thrives. Beavers are unsung heroes that shaped our country in more ways than one. Bob Boucher and Heidi Perryman, an “accidental beaver advocate” and will charm us with their fascination for these amazing animals.

Learning to Live With Fire
Dr. Sasha Berleman
Whether we like it or not, California’s forests are tinderboxes. The good news is there are people who know how to manage our forests in a way that will mitigate the devastating and destructive wildfires we have been experiencing the last few years. Dr. Berleman is the Bay Area’s expert in Forest Fire Management. One of her areas of focus is "controlled burns" -- if we do "controlled burns" to burn the dry vegetation, then much of the fuel for wildfires is gone. Come join us as Dr. Berleman talks to us about all the things we can do to tame these California wildfires.

But the myths and the familiar history stories you’ve heard about Suffrage aren’t really what happened. The story is much more exciting than you ever dreamed. There are few speakers who bring the past alive in all its ferocious, often flawed, sometimes majestic complexity, Dr. Wagner is one of them. She is spell binding. We are honored to have Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner, who was selected as one of “21 Leaders for the 21st Century”, and who wrote the faculty guide for Ken Burns’ documentary on Suffrage, to fill us in on what really happened.

What Would Florence Think?
We’ve all heard the name Florence Nightingale – but do you know exactly what she did? Florence, using statistics, noted that 10 times more soldiers died of infectious diseases caused by unsanitary hospital conditions (cholera, dysentery, typhoid) than those who died of bullets and cannon balls. She was instrumental in getting hospitals to clean up their sanitation – from toilets to ventilation and overcrowding. We’ll take a historical look at how treatment of infectious diseases has evolved up to present day to Dr. Anthony Fauci who is now leading the charge on social distancing. A robust Q&A will be happily welcomed. email your questions to:

Migration is a fundamental feature of human history. But what is different today? Water! We can’t live without! But where does it come from? And how do we know there’s enough for all of us? How do we know if it’s safe to drink? What about waste water? Do the fires ever contaminate our water? Fortunately for us, Dale and Anne think about these all these issues so that we don’t have to. They will open our eyes to their thoughtful and ingenious stewardship of our precious water.
